President Signs Executive Order Mandating That Poor People Work or Lose ‘Welfare’

Without much fanfare (totally apropos, given what’s been happening in the world of the White House in the last 72 hours),
President Donald Trump signed an executive order Tuesday that will
force recipients of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits,
Medicaid and low-income housing subsidies to find work or lose their
assistance.

Trump quietly signed the long-anticipated order, oddly named
“Reducing Poverty in America by Promoting Opportunity and Economic
Mobility.” Given that many government agencies, including the Department
of Health and Human Services, have already begun issuing waivers to
Republican governors who want to impose stricter work requirements on
Medicaid recipients to cut costs, it will not make much of an impact, according to the New York Times.

The
fact remains that most able-bodied adults who receive federal aid in
the form of subsidized health care or housing already work—but are still
unable to make ends meet; others receive exemptions for legitimate
reasons.

From the Times:

The order gave
all cabinet departments 90 days to produce plans that impose work
requirements on able-bodied aid recipients and block ineligible
immigrants from receiving aid, while drafting “a list of recommended
regulatory and policy changes” to push recipients off the rolls and into
jobs.

The aim, Trump aides said … is to prod federal
and state officials to take a tougher stance with aid recipients —
millions of whom currently receive exemptions from existing work
requirements because they are in training programs, provide care for
relatives or volunteer their labor.

The Agriculture Department is
already pressuring states to impose work requirements in the
Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, the program formerly known as
food stamps. Earlier this year, the Department of Health and Human
Services granted a waiver to Arkansas
so it could require Medicaid recipients to get jobs, participate in job
training or engage in job searches at least 80 hours a month.

According
to the Kaiser Foundation, most able-bodied adults who do not already
have jobs face obstacles in working, including mental problems, criminal
records and certain family situations.

Yet the narrative from the Trump administration says differently.

“Our
country suffers from nearly record high welfare enrollments,” said
Andrew Bremberg, the president’s domestic policy chief, according to the
Times, which notes that Temporary Assistance for Needy Families
payments to poor people are approaching record lows.

Trump also
reportedly wants to change the word “welfare” to include not only cash
payments  but also food and medical benefits (SNAP and Medicaid).

Or
he just doesn’t give AF. And I quote: “Mr. Trump, several aides said,
is unconcerned—or perhaps even unaware—of the distinction between cash
assistance and other safety-net programs … he calls them all welfare.”

And we know what connotations go along with that.

FFFUUUCCCKKK

Goddammit.

To all the people this bullshit is going to harm and make life even more awful/difficult for: remember that the Republicans are the ones responsible for this shit during the midterm elections this year

AND VOTE THESE HATEFUL SACKS OF SHIT OUT

This is how they kill poor people, slowly and legally

My dad will lose both his home and food stamps from this.

The Seer {Jojen Reed x Reader}

Anonymous requested: “Could you do a Jojen Reed x Reader please?”

WARNINGS: a bit of OOC Jojen? It’s au, so it sort of comes with the territory.

{This is a bit of an au, so here’s some background. The Starks are the Kings of the North, and Jojen is a court-seer treated as a prophet by some. Y/N is servant within the castle, and well, you.}

You’d only seen the seer a few times. He’d enter, speak softly to the King, and leave just as quickly as he’d come. He never went to the feasts that you tended to, and was often absent from tourneys. He was something of an enigma within a court, an extraordinary individual from an ordinary beginning who seemed to fully capture the King’s attention whenever he sought it. That was enviable enough, forgetting his boyish good-looks, and his apparent charm.

Your first opinion of the boy was not as glowing.

Clarification: is there a set, standard amount of time, such as “one second”, that a “measure” of music lasts…? I understand that “4/4 time” means “four beats per measure”, but unless the length of time a “measure” lasts is consistent between songs, how does that make sense?

absolutely not; timing in music is not dependent on measure length, but instead based entirely on tempo. there ARE certain time signatures that are typically faster, such as 6/8, but there is no true standard and even 6/8 can be slower than 4/4, depending on the tempo. hope that helps!

who is responsible for this

Larghissimo — very, very slow (20 bpm and below) Translation*: plenty of time to get distracted between measures. Or notes.

Grave — slow and solemn (20–40 bpm) Translation: just serious enough for nervous laughter during rests. Avoid eye contact with anyone.

Lento — slowly (40–60 bpm) Translation: it is actually possible to fall asleep while playing an instrument, to the confusion and horror of your teacher.

Largo — broadly (40–60 bpm) Translation: dramatic grand gestures while sober. Think sweeping.

Larghetto — rather broadly (60–66 bpm) Translation: dramatic grand gestures while drunk. Slightly more manic or erratic

Adagio — slow and stately (literally, “at ease”) (66–76 bpm) Translation: Julie Andrews, Queen of Genovia, is entering the room. Plenty of time to focus on hitting the right notes b/c u cannot fuck this up.

Adagietto — rather slow (70–80 bpm) Translation: the high school graduating class of 2018 is entering the room. 40% elated 70% bored. Mostly restrained by the staff, still want this over with.

Andante moderato — a bit slower than andante. Translation: a steady meander in the woods. Fast enough to be interesting, slow enough to savor.

Andante — at a walking pace (76–108 bpm) Translation: CPR speed! Do you have Stayin Alive or Another One Bites the Dust in your head? Either way good luck remembering your melody now.

Andantino – slightly faster than andante. Translation: Just saw someone you do NOT want to talk to but you don’t want to draw attention. Always feels slightly forced. That’s fine.

Moderato — moderately (108–120 bpm) Translation: Marching is the tenuous balance between comfortable speed for walking and comfortable speed for music. Much easier when not in a parade.

Allegretto — moderately fast (but less so than allegro). Translation: the piece is probably in moderato but you’re having fun! You totally got this! Everything’s a bit fast but you’re still hitting all the notes! Go you!

Allegro moderato — moderately quick (112–124 bpm) Translation: Approximately dancing speed, depending on your confidence and the degree to which you know where all your limbs are at any given time. Jam a little in your seat. It’s okay.

Allegro — fast, quickly and bright (120–168 bpm). Playful, for flirting without words. Wink as needed without losing your place.

Vivace — lively and fast (≈140 bpm) (quicker than allegro) Translation: That was probably too much coffee but it’s FINE. It’s probably not physically possible for your heart to beat out of your chest.

Vivacissimo — very fast and lively. Translation: Either you’re showing off or the composer wanted you to suffer. Probably the former.

Allegrissimo — very fast. Translation: You’re not one of those aerobic respirators are you? You can breathe when we finish this piece. Hold on for the ride.

Presto — very fast (168–200 bpm) Translation: use popcorn popping as your metronome. Doesn’t actually have a regular beat but at this speed neither do you.

Prestissimo — extremely fast (more than 200bpm) Translation: you don’t know what’s happening and neither does your conductor if you have one. Reeds are splitting, strings are snapping, wind instruments can’t feel their tongues. Flail your fingers and prey.*.

as a kid i always thought gotham was in michigan because i thought it was a midwestern city like chicago, and there was always shit going down at the pier or in abandoned factories and if michigan has anything it’s a lot of piers and abandoned factories. anyway turns out it’s probably in jersey.

other good reasons for gotham to be in michigan:

  • one of the most heavily forested states in the country with 20 million acres of forests oh my god poison ivy would be so powerful the second she got outside city limits fuck
image
  • there’s 20 million acres of this and she’s got plant powers no wonder they want her on lockdown
  • there are more than 6,000 shipwrecks in the great lakes how many supervillain origin stories is that good for
  • there’s a whole class of freighter just for the great lakes
  • “63 commercial ports handled 173 million tons of cargo in 2006″ aka holy shit that is a lot of opportunities for boatcrimes
  • mr freeze has a pretty tragic origin story but if you had to put up with michigan winters and then some motherfucker showed up freezing the town outside of freezing season you would have no mercy
image
  • MOTHERFUCKER I JUST PUT MY SNOWBLOWER IN STORAGE DO I LOOK LIKE I NEED THIS SHIT RIGHT NOW
  • imagine batman giving someone directions by pointing to his hand
  • “we believe killer croc is somewhere around here” he says pointing to the tip of his thumb
  • good fucking luck finding stats on abandoned buildings in michigan but holy shit are there a lot of them, no wonder they’re always having fights in abandoned factories and empty warehouses
image
image
  • “kitty why are you including that map of the railroads like it’s relevant” because when you’re trying to sleep and you hear a train in the distance it’s fucking spooky okay
  • i have no evidence that traincrime is an issue for batman i’m just saying the ambiance is there
  • michigan has plenty of abandoned theme parks for the joker to hijack
  • our most famous abandoned theme park is dinosaur themed so I GUESS WE KNOW WHERE HE GOT THE T-REX
image
  • we have a special kind of ice cream called superman ice cream and i think bruce would be really bitter about it and that’s hilarious
  • there are nine different species of bat in michigan and they have all lived in my kitchen at some point
  • michigan is full of mines both abandoned and active and bats love them
  • put an abandoned train station next to and abandoned mine and you have a totally plausible CRIMEZONE
image
  • and none of this is getting into the most compelling evidence
  • put a city in michigan and watch how fast no one gives a fuck
  • gotham, MI needs batman because who the fuck else is going to help
  • batman please save us from the cops and the state government

I always thought that Gotham was Chicago and Metropolis was New York City.

that’s what i thought but apparently metropolis is new york during the day and gotham is new york at night which means the dc universe has three new yorks which i think even new yorkers can agree is too many

here are some more michigan batman facts:

  • we already have evil clowns
  • when i was a kid i used to slide down the slopes made by snowplows on my stomach which i feel is relevant to the penguin
  • there’s always a ton of cars from the 30s driving around gotham which makes perfect sense if it’s in michigan because that’s when we made cars and we’re not over it
  • rick snyder and his emergency managers are basically supervillains and i want batman to punch them
  • michigan is closer to kansas which means bruce can visit clark’s parents and then they’re emailing clark about what a nice young man he is and there’s nothing clark can do about it
  • batman vs superman: the deep dish debate
  • “who would name a city bludhaven” well we’ve already got bad axe and colon and gaylord and climax and grim and hell and frankenlust and gore and that’s just the first half of the alphabet
  • if someone said that a city in michigan had been hijacked by an evil clown that was only stopped when a man in an animal costume kicked him in the face would you even blink
  • this is meadow brook hall in rochester mi
image
  • this is the charles t fisher house
image
  • here’s the james scott residence
image
  • welcome to michigan hope u like houses with turrets and fucked up clowns and evil men poisoning the water

1) Put four pills on each side. The heavier side has the pill. Take the four pills from the heavier side.

2) Put two of the potential pills on each side of the scale. The heavier side has the poison pill.

3) Take the two potential pills. Swallow one. If you survive, you are holding the poison pill. If you die, you have eaten the poisoned pill. Either way you will find out which one it is for sure

1) Weigh 6 of them, 3 on each side

2a) If both sides are equal, weigh the 2 you didn’t use before.

2b) If one side was heavier, pick 2 of the 3 and weigh them. Heavier one is poisoned. If they’re even, it’s the 3rd.

Well, all I can say is that we all have our methods and some of us are more willing to take a risk in the name of science

Music to write or study to! These playlists are works in progress and are continuously growing. Titled after like-themed action movie and game music, the playlists each have their own personality, and encourage different moods or activity levels. Most music is from soundtracks. The calmest playlists, Temple Ruins and Party Camp, are useful for getting into the writing or studying mood. This music is less distracting. Once your pace is set, or if you want to get in the mood to write an action scene, Boss Fight is the playlist for you. Tavern Nights, of course, is a fun-filled playlist, but it can be more distracting, and Field Music is right in the middle.

WHERE WAS THIS LAST WEEK WHEN I WAS LOOKING FOR THIS SPECIFIC POST?!?!?!?

France is living something historical

dimancheetoile:

dimancheetoile:

March, 11th. While students were occupying a lecture hall in Montpellier’s University of Law, the Dean sent a fascist group helped by two teachers to beat up the students. Three of them ended up in the hospital, the girl in the picture with a fractured skull.

March, 27th. 4,000 students are sitting at Montpellier’s University of Art and Literature . We are voting the continued occupation of the University until all our demands are met. We make sure to include the French President’s resignation in our demands, to be certain that they will never be met. To this day, the university is still occupied.

April, 4th.

“Travaille, consomme et ferme ta gueule ! Et c’est quoi le message qu’on passe aux jeunes ?” “Tout est à nous ! Tout est à nous ! Rien n’est à eux ! Rien n’est à eux ! Tout ce qu’ils ont, ils l’ont volé ! Partage des richesses, partage des savoirs ou alors ça va péter !”

“Work, buy and shut the fuck up! And what’s the message you give to the youth?” “Everything is ours! Nothing is theirs! All they have, they have stolen! Share the wealth, share the knowledge or we will blow everything up!”

National day of strike. 2,700 people in Paris. 1,000 in Lyon. 2,000 in Montpellier. The workers joined the students, the hospital staff, the train and rails staff. Everyone marched, threatened by the CRS (security police) and smoke bombs. We had to stay masked because fascists groups were attacking people leaving the march.

April, 11th

Montpellier: Paul Valery University’s servers hacked, final exams pending

The Dean of my University (Art and Literature) has been a vocal opposant of our movement. In an effort to stop the occupation and threaten us, he has repeatedly refused to come to our meetins, has ignored the decisions made by the teaching staff and threatened to fire teachers who decided to march with us. His last effort has been regarding finals. Because the university is blocked since February (see the post I made), we didn’t have classes and almost no material to take exams. Final week was supposed to be from April 9th to 13th. The Dean ordered the teachers to create online exams for us to send. We received the subjects Friday 6th. I had to write an 18-page-long essay on animation in TWO DAYS. But today, something incredible happened. The plateform used by the university to communicate with students and send our exams was hacked by the protesting students. We can’t access it. We can’t send our exams. Furthermore, an assembly of teachers was held yesterday and they decided that they were going to play on a technicality. The Dean ordered them to make exams; he didn’t say if he wanted the teachers to grade them. A unanimous vote decided that they would give 10 to each student (we are graded on 20 and 10 is the minimum to pass) and bonus point if they give the exams.

Again, I’m begging you, share this around. The governement is purposefully hiding what is happening because they’re afraid it’s going to turn into another May, 1968. Reblog, repost, I don’t care. I just want people to see it. I’m 20 and I’m risking my life when I march.

I HAVE NEWS AND IT’S SCARY

Message from the video games teacher: “Hello everyone. There are rumors of police intervention in the next 48 hours on campus. I’m asking you to share the information, I will personnally be on campus tomorrow all day, as well as Friday. I don’t want to advise you to come, I’d feel too responsable if something happened to you… I do however think that the more students and teachers are here, the less risk there is that the police will come…’

[MORE NEWS]

“New information: a staff meeting is organized tomorrow at 9am by the university’s Dean. We just had Sud Eduction on the phone and they informed us that the meeting is organized in anticipation, to celebrate a very likely victory of the police against the students at 7am. I will be on campus at 6:30am with other teachers to support the students in case the police does come…”

THIS IS SCARY OK. THEY ARE DOING THE SAME THING THAT THE LAW UNI DEAN HAS DONE.

Tomorrow, I will go at 6:30. Let the police come. If they get violent against peaceful students who haven’t touched ANYONE in the two months this protest has been going on, there will be consequences. We will take pictures, we will film. I’m a fucking cinema students and you can bet I’ll send my bloodied face to every fucking news station if they ever lay a finger on me.

Again, I beg you, share this, please. If I’m about to get my face broken, it better be for the greater good.

The fate of net neutrality could be decided in California next week

mbak-that-ass-up:

State legislators in California have introduced the best,
most comprehensive, net neutrality bill in the country. But powerful
telecom giants like AT&T are pulling out all the stops to kill it
before it even gets to a vote, and the word on the street is they’ve
hired up basically every contract lobbyist in Sacramento.

The California net neutrality fight has implications for the whole country.
If this bill passes it will set a strong precedent for other states,
and build momentum for Congress to restore protections at the federal
level.

Call and tweet these State Senators right now and tell them to support SB 822 to restore net neutrality!
