Not only did he look different, but there was something about him that changed during those months in Niagara. He wasn’t your Mac anymore. He was someone else’, and not one part of you knew how to process that new found information.
“Here, let me take your bag”.
“I got it”.
Mac blocked the stairwell to the jet, taking the few extra minutes as Jack talked on the phone to finally have a one-on-one conversation with you. “Since when?. You hate carrying your bag”.
“Yeah, well. Things change”.
“What is that suppose to mean?”.
“Nothing, forget it”.
Within seconds Mac occupied the chair opposite, and your view of the runway suddenly became the most interesting piece of scenery you’d ever seen. He whispered your name, his soft tone layered with a plea to look at him. “Talk to me”.
“Why?. I already know what you’re going to say”.
“Oh yeah, what’s that?”. He said, narrowing his eyes. “Come on, if you know me so well, prove it”.
“You left, Mac. But that’s not even the part that hurts. It’s that you fell in love with someone else. So when I tell you I love you, you’re going to tell me you have no idea what to say. Or that even if I told you sooner the timing wasn’t right. Or that you don’t feel the same”.
Flickering your eyes up, you met his blank stare.“And even though your home, this isn’t where your heart is anymore”.
After the tiresome mission infiltrating a top of the notch security filled mansion, you relished in the tranquility of soft music and a warm shower. Running a hand over the steamed up mirror, you took a breath.
“I thought me telling you to abort coming upstairs was a pretty clear instruction to follow”. Mac pressed his hands on the wall, taking a peak to determine if the coast was clear.
“Riley needed a few more minutes to extract the data from his phone. And we would of gotten it if you didn’t feel the need to come save me, and do your part in making sure he stayed downstairs”.
“I can’t believe you’re blaming me”. He said, letting out a throaty chuckle.
“I had this, but you wouldn’t listen”.
“You’re the one who hasn’t been listening to me since we got off the plane, so don’t turn this around on me“. He sighed, lowering his voice. “I get you’re mad, but taking those feelings out on the field is dangerous”.
Leaning as far back as you could, it still made no difference.“I can never be mad at you, Mac. I realized that after you left. I wanted to be, but I-I just couldn’t”.
Jumping at the sound of the doorbell, your eyes darted to the time. It was way to late or in this case early for any visitors.
“You’re wrong”.
“Excuse me?”. Tightening the robe around your frame, frowning at his random outburst.
“If you’d told me you loved me, I wouldn’t of ignored it or said I didn’t feel the same way”.
“Mac, you don’t need to make me feel better”.
“I’m not. I’m telling you that my heart is here, with you”. Wishing you were close enough to grab something, Mac, yet again, came to your rescue. “Those few months in Niagara were great to forget all about my dad being Overwatch. But just like you couldn’t be mad at me for leaving, I couldn’t forget you".
“Seemed to me like you did a pretty good job”.
His thumb followed your collarbone, outlined your lips and lingered on your chin. “My relationship with Nasha isn’t as serious as you think it is”.
“Wha-what are you saying?”.
“That I love you too”.
