Summary:Inspired by “Mutual” by Shawn Mendes. Listenhere.
Are you playing me, is this a game?. When you show up late, say love at 2 am, then tell me you can’t say. Girl, yeah, what do you want from me?
“Thank you”. Taking the large cup of coffee that you’d been waiting all morning to enjoy. Pouring one sachet of raw sugar into the heavenly liquid of limited energy, you stirred while simultaneously glancing out onto the street.
It was weird to be back in Mission City, even weirder that things hadn’t changed since you left. The coffee shop was still owned by the lovely elderly women who always gave you a free cookie with your hot chocolate when she saw you were having a rough day. The bookstore’s decor still reminded you of old fashion rustic vibes, and the park swings across the small field still had your initials etched under the seat.
Firmly pressing the lid back on, you checked what was next on the calendar. Upon doing so you nearly spilled your coffee on the man entering the cafe. “I’m so-”.
“You always were in a rush to get to places, I’m glad to see that hasn’t changed”. The man voice spoke, sounding very familiar.
You looked up and recognized Mac immediately. He wasn’t so different from the college days. His hair was somewhat a bit longer, but it suited him. “Out of all the places I thought ‘d run into you Mission City wasn’t on the list”.
“I’m only here to show a few close friends were I grew up, they wouldn’t stop bugging me about it”. He starched the back of his neck. You knowing that it would’ve took a great deal of convincing for Mac to come here again. “Are you busy right now?. I’d love to catch up”.
You should’ve said no, this wasn’t the right time to get involved with anyone. Yet, you spent the afternoon with Mac, listening to his stories from the army and him asking what you’ve been up too since the last time he saw you.
The conversation was going so well that it was only until the barista came up to inform you guys the cafe was closing that you realized how fast the day went by. Mac offered to walk you to the hotel, it resided a few blocks from here, an easy 5 minute stroll away. However, you liked tonight’s company and didn’t object his gentlemen offer.
Standing outside the room, neither knew how to say goodbye. A kiss on the cheek seemed too much and a hug seemed not enough. Mac opted for an awkward smiled, “I guess this is goodnight then”.
“I guess it is”. Unlocking the door but keeping it shut.
Mac leaned in for a hug, the awkwardness he was emitting before disappeared as he gently wrapped his arms around you. There was a slight hesitation from the both of you to pull away. Despite that, Mac broke the embrace and it was back to being nervous.
“Would you like to come in?”. You asked, opening the door a notch. “I would say for coffee but since we already had some, how about dessert?”.
“I could go for some dessert”. He replied, stepping into your hotel room. You bit your lip and hung the do not disturb sign on the door.
4 Months Later
Friends with benefits, casual “sleepovers”, fuck buddies – whatever the correct term, that’s what you and Mac were doing. Whenever you were in town, Mac’s place would be the first place you’d visit. By now you lost count how many times in the last four months you awoke with a naked Mac sleeping beside you.
Running your fingers softy through your hair to tame the strands flicking in all directions, once most of it was controlled you unbuttoned Mac’s shirt and replaced it with yesterdays clothes.
“No goodbye?”. Mac pulled the sheets up to cover his torso, his morning voice thick and husky.
“I thought it was best to let you catch up on sleep, you know since we didn’t get much last night”. Zipping up your left open toed grey boots, preparing to leave just as soon as you found the other shoe. Spotting it peaking under Mac’s jeans, he reached for it before you could. “I need my shoe to leave, Mac”.
“You’ll get it back, just have breakfast with me first”. He negotiated. While he was trying to be cute all it did was annoy you. One knee on the bed to hold your weight, you leaned forward, inches away from Mac’s lips. He was too focused on whether you were going to kiss him that he didn’t even see your right hand slide under the covers. He hissed at the unexpected contact, causing him to loosen his grip on your boot.
Your aim was to get the shoe, but you loved seeing Mac submit to your touch, so you continued to help him reach his peck. “So that’s it then?. Sleep with me, jerk me off in the morning and then leave?”.
Placing your shoe on it’s rightful foot, you sighed. “It hasn’t changed from all the other times we’ve done this”.
“Maybe I want it to change, did you ever think about that?. Being your booty call at 2 in the morning or any other time for that matter was fun when we first started, but I think it’s time we talk”. Mac stated, reaching for his top and a clean set of briefs.
“Mac, baby-”
He shut the drawer and turned to face you. “I like you,Y/N, and I thought that was pretty obvious. And I also thought this-”. He pointed to the messy bed sheets. “could be more then just sex”. You sat on the bed, facing away from Mac. He slid behind you, legs dangling either side with you sitting in between his legs. “I don’t want to be the guy you call just to sleep with anymore. I want to be the guy that can satisfy all your needs, not just the physical ones”.
At some point you knew the tables would turn, expect you didn’t think it would be this soon. Standing up, you needed Mac to understand anything more was not in the cards. “Why can’t it we just be two adults who occasional sleep together, no strings attached?. It’s been working fine for the last few months, why complicate it?”.
“Because I need to know if this is mutual before I get too attached to you. If what we’re doing can turn from meaningless sex to an actual relationship”.
“Mac-”
He cut you off by picking up your jacket and handing it to you “Please don’t call me again unless it’s to tell me you’ve changed your mind”.
Not wanting to cause Mac any more pain you quietly left. Your intention was never for it to end up like this, but then again how else was it suppose to end.
It had been just under a week since you last saw Mac, and you had to admit it was a tough pill to swallow not waking up to him most morning’s. Your brain couldn’t quite come up with an accurate conclusion as to why letting him go was tough. However, your heart could. And it was screaming for you to wake up and accept your feelings mirrored Mac’s.
So here you were, back at Mac’s place. He opened the door, giving no friendly greeting. “I owe you the truth, an explanation. Can I come in?”. Hoping that it wasn’t too late. He ultimately stepped aside and you felt the nerves rise.
The door to his bedroom was wide open, he followed your gaze and blocked the view. “So, what’s this explanation you’re here to give”.
Breathing in then out, you spilled the truth. “The first time we slept together in Mission City after seeing each
other again in years, I knew I wouldn’t be able to keep this casual.
But, I tried to fight it. And then hearing you say you had feelings, I
got scared and I couldn’t risk opening myself up to the hurt and pain that comes with being in a relationship”.
You could see Mac was having trouble understanding where all this was coming from by the way his eyes crinkled. “Who hurt you so badly?. Because the Y/N I knew believed that love was worth all the risks”.
“Well,
that girl got left at the altar”. Mac straightened
up, alarmed at the news you almost got married. “My ex-fiance was too
much of a coward to tell me why to my face, so he only left a note with
the words I’m sorry. Since then I’ve never let
myself get emotionally attached to anyone, instead I’d just run”. Meeting Mac’s stare.
He leaned down to delicately place a kiss on your lips. “You don’t have to run anymore”.
“Promise?”.
Mac lifted your chin, his blue eyes holding so much devotion just for you. “I promise”.
